Today former Muskogee police officer Jackie Luckey, now with GCBHS and Project U 21 liaison, brought out the fatal vision goggles during all lunch periods at MHS. Students tried on the goggles to experience how dysfunctional a person becomes under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There was quite a crowd, so we can hope that many students got the point.
Additionally, the Junior Class, which sponsors the Prom, has ordered party favors for all Prom goers that have anti-drinking messages on them. Hopefully the subliminal messages will stick in the students' minds and deter them from dangerous behavior.
Green Country Behavioral Health is also sponsoring "The Red Carpet Rolls On" Prom After Party at the old YMCA from midnight until 2:00. There will be music, snacks, and activities free of charge. All MHS students and their dates are welcome with ID. For more information call Dawn Blue or Jackie Luckey with GCBHS on Main St.

As Mel indicates,information is out there for kids. Lots of it. I think one of the most effective is through MADD..loved ones of a teen killed because of drinking and driving present their side..their grief and loss...(with family pictures, letters and other visuals)
and next, a young driver who chose to drink and the results of his choice..the guilt, the remorse and the legal implications that will impact his life choices for a very long time.
It was a powerful program, presented right before prom at MHS several years ago.
Not drinking and driving is very important, but alcohol poisoning is a very real problem. Binge drinking is dangerous yet often the party of choice for lots of our youth.
Yes, SADD presented it last year - it is from the Victim's Impact Panel. We do it every other year and this is our off year. We also normally have a wrecked car in the circle or in front of the school donated by Bud Morgan, but since we have paired up with Project U21 for this after prom party, we didn't bring the wrecked car out.
Let's hope the kids act responsibly on Saturday night. Lots of them are planning on going to special senior church services Sunday morning and Baccalaureate on Sunday afternoon!!
For those parents/kids who want their Jrs./Srs. to be safe and know they will be drinking and other stuff; what about renting a bus or limo and try and contain the party. Is this realistic or am I just adding fuel to the problem?
I know you all remember when there was a group of students that chartered a bus for prom night, and their parents supplied coolers full of "drinks" for the students to enjoy. What a mess!
That was also the year of the feather at commencement. Another big mess! It's hard to believe it's been 11 years.
You can rent a limo, but even if liquor is smelled on your child's breath, it could be grounds for a MAPS placement for the summer. It sounds like a safe idea in theory, but there had better not be any liquor before or during the Prom. The consequences are too big a price to pay. When you really think about it, if your child was injured or even worse, killed someone in a drunk driving accident after the Prom, those consequences would be unbearable, so just not condoning it at all is maybe the best policy.
The MHS Prom was wonderful! The deorations were great and all the kids seemed to be having a good time!
